A new, independent body focussed on rebuilding social connection and cohesion across Britain will launch in the spring. The Independent Commission on Community and Cohesion is backed by both the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition, in a rare show cross-party support, highlighting the importance of this work.
Chaired by former Communities Secretaries, Sir Sajid David and John Denham, and convened by the Together Coalition, the goal of the Commission is to ensure that everyone has a voice and stake in our shared future.
The Commission will undertake a wide-ranging evidence review and bring together both experts and the public to answer the question, ‘How do we live well together in our communities?’
Belong is pleased to announce that we will be working in partnership with the Together Coalition and British Future on building the Commission’s early evidence base through an initial call for evidence, focus groups and roundtables.
Kelly Fowler, CEO of Belong said:
“A national conversation that will allow people to voice their concerns, but importantly – how we address them – is long overdue. We are delighted to be supporting the Commission as it develops its early evidence base and look forward to sharing more over the coming weeks as this exciting project progresses.”
Shalni Arora, Co-Chair of Trustees at Belong said:
“Six months on from the summer riots, this Commission could not come at a more pivotal moment for social cohesion in the UK. The country is feeling increasingly polarised and we are in desperate need of an honest conversation about where we go next. At Belong we know from our work with local authorities, charities, and faith networks that there are already those doing brilliant work on the ground in their local communities, but this Commission offers a chance to join the dots. I am glad to see cross-party support for this project, which will hold a mirror to society and amplify everyone’s voices, including those who often feel unheard, hopefully leading to a more united Britain.”
A final report from the Commission will be published at the end of the year. If you would like to submit evidence please visit the Commission’s website or email evidence@livingwelltogether.org.uk.
