What is Power of Events?

Power of Events synthesises learning from Spirit of 2012’s archive and other relevant literature to encourage and support event organisers to maximise their benefits to social cohesion and connection. This report has been developed alongside an online learning resource, due to be released in early 2025, so as to maximise accessibility and allow all event organisers the opportunity to design their events in a way that encourages greater social cohesion.

Twenty-eight projects, ranging from large-scale programmes such as £2.85m for Hull City of Culture (2017) to small-scale events with minimal budgets including community carnivals and local celebrations to mark the Coronation of King Charles III, were selected for the learning they provide on what makes an event that results in people feeling more connected to their communities and that builds social cohesion.

The Power of Events report makes recommendations on four areas: understanding people and place; evaluation methods; volunteers/participants/audiences; and creating a legacy. This report contributes to the knowledge base on how events can strengthen people’s sense of belonging and the positive identity of a place. It emphasises, particularly, the power of events to build connection across difference and engage those who do not currently take part in community activities.

The recommendations are to be taken forward by a range of stakeholders, including government departments, funding bodies, arts and sports development organisations, local authorities and larger charities. The learning resource linked to these findings will be more accessible to local organisations and groups who will be guided in how to build social cohesion goals within their event planning and evaluation.
